Last week, State Senator Patty Pansing Brooks of Lincoln introduced a bill in the State Legislature to institute harsher punishments on human and sex traffickers!

Human trafficking, and sex slavery in particular, is one of the gravest evils imaginable. To take someone made in the image of God, and sell or enslave them like property, is to devalue life and to spit in the face of God himself. One of the God-given duties of government is to protect everyone in its jurisdiction from violence from others. Slavery is one of the worst kinds of violence!

That is why properly punishing and deterring human trafficking is of utmost importance. Let’s thank State Senator Brooks for her effort to do just that and encourage the whole legislature to pass this bill!

Under Legislative Bill 289, the penalties for sex trafficking in Nebraska would be raised to a minimum of one year and a maximum of 50 years in prison, up from zero to four years! The law would apply to all those who engage in trafficking, but also those who hire women who are forced into prostitution. We must deter both the supply and demand side of this evil practice!

State Senator Brooks has called the current penalties a “slap on the wrist”: harsher penalties are necessary both to deter evil men from enslaving others and to provide justice for the victims of traffickers. The bill brings the punishment more in line with these “despicable crimes”—it even has harsher penalties for involvement in the sex trafficking of minors and for physical harm of slaves.

Brooks has also stated her conclusion that other states that have increased penalties for sex trafficking in this manner have seen such activities sharply decrease. Our government must do everything it can to stop this evil practice! This new law is a no-brainer and is necessary to stand for justice.

“Everybody’s really serious about coming together and saying we’re not accepting this in Nebraska anymore,” State Senator Brooks said. Indeed, the state Attorney General, the Women’s Fund of Omaha, and the Nebraska Family Alliance all support this legislation!

Please join me in thanking State Senator Brooks and telling the Nebraska legislature that we want this law passed as soon as possible! Our leaders must stand up for the rights of the most vulnerable and protect them from evil! This is a great way to continue that work.

Fight back against sex slavery!

Dear Nebraska Legislature,

We are writing to strongly support Legislative Bill 289, State Senator Brooks’ bill to increase the penalties for human and sex trafficking.

Human trafficking, and sex slavery in particular, is one of the gravest evils imaginable. To take someone made in the image of God, and sell or enslave them like property, is to devalue life itself. One of the God-given duties of government is to protect everyone in its jurisdiction from violence from others. Slavery is one of the worst kinds of violence!

That is why properly punishing and deterring human trafficking is of utmost importance. The bill is also important because it provides harsher penalties for both human traffickers, and those who use trafficked women. It is so important to deter both the supply and demand side of this evil practice!

It is our understanding that states that have increased penalties for sex trafficking in this manner have seen such activities sharply decrease. Our government must do everything it can to stop this evil practice! This new law is a no-brainer and is necessary to stand for justice.

Thank you for your consideration, and please quickly pass this bill into law for Nebraska!

Sincerely,
