Thank Kathleen Sloan for speaking up against the evils of surrogacy!
The sexual revolution has done great damage to American society. Promiscuous, no-boundaries sex has led to an increase in Sexually Transmitted Diseases, pregnancies out of wedlock, and broken relationships. The movement supposedly based on “love” has really wrought a generation of ungrounded hedonistic young people who increasingly reject religion in favor of sexual pleasure. And probably the biggest casualty of the sexual revolution has been the commoditization of children. We see this most clearly in abortion—but in all sorts of ways, the Left has decided that children are not endowed with human rights but are rather commodities that can be terminated, purchased, or given away based on whether they are “wanted.”
What a tragedy! Beyond the millions of deaths of unborn babies, however, this commoditization continues apace. Catholic orphanages are forced to decide between letting gay couples adopt children or else shut their doors—the well-meaning government bureaucrats caring not at all for the well-being of the orphans who now no longer have an orphanage, so long as the gay agenda is advanced. And more recently, surrogacy has been championed as a solution for gay and infertile couples to “have their own” children. But at base, surrogacy is an example of modern-day human trafficking—babies are purchased from fertile mothers, and both mother and child are treated more like property and objects of contract law than human persons.
Thankfully, some national leaders are speaking out against this practice! Sign here to thank Kathleen Sloan—former member of the board of directors of the National Organization for Women in Connecticut (NOW)—for writing an article in Public Discourse outlining how “Surrogacy is out of control in the United States.”
In her courageous article, Sloan notes that “the US is driving the surrogacy industry globally.” That is because it is one of only two countries that hasn’t passed legislation regulating or prohibiting the practice. The legalization and enforcement of surrogacy in courts throughout our country, however, has led to what Sloan calls the “commodification and state-sanctioned and enforced purchase of family rights.” In other words, children are allowed to be “purchased and placed with adults regardless of whether . . . such placement is in the children’s best interest, or whether the surrogate mothers desire to and are better able to care for the children.”
Instead, once a surrogacy purchase contract is in place, a mother has no right except to give up her child to the purchase “parents.” This is human trafficking, plain and simple, and in the words of Sloan “is a stunning denial of due process.”
Like so many other forms of trafficking, surrogacy treats children like commodities rather than what they are: people, human beings worthy of every legal protection that adults and all other people are entitled to.
Too many on the Left are willing to tolerate this and many other evils (like abortion) in order to fuel their hedonistic lifestyle. Please join me in thanking Ms. Sloan for decrying surrogacy and its creation of “a generation of children severed from biological and genetic identity and a breeder class of marginalized women.” The women and the children in the Land of the Free deserve better!
